Baththa Synopsis: What Is the Story About?
The year is 1986, and the city is still called Madras. At the centre of Baththa (Tamil: பத்தா) is an eight-year-old boy who is shy and easily frightened. Through a simple accident, he locks a dreaded gangster inside the toilet of an abandoned school building. With no easy way out, the trapped man has to sit with things his reputation usually lets him avoid: an empty stomach, long stretches of isolation and a fragility he rarely shows anyone.
The heart of the film is what slowly grows between these two mismatched people. One is a child who is scared of the world, and the other is a man the world is scared of. Their connection develops in the most unlikely of places. Writer-director Balaji Tharaneetharan blends drama, comedy and action around this small, contained setup, set against the backdrop of 1980s Madras. The film runs 159 minutes and is presented in Tamil.
