Plot: What Is A Bowl of Chicken Noodles Before I Die About?
A Bowl of Chicken Noodles Before I Die (original title: Seporsi Mie Ayam Sebelum Mati) centres on Ale, played by Benidictus Siregar. Ale has reached the point where he no longer wants to go on living. Before he lets go, he gives himself one last, very ordinary wish: a bowl of mie ayam, the chicken noodles he loves, from the food cart he always visits.
That small plan goes wrong right away, because his regular cart is closed. Instead of a quiet final meal, Ale’s search for his favourite noodles sets off a string of chance meetings he never planned for.
The story’s power lies in its scale. There is no grand mission here, only a man, a craving and a single day. Through that simple setup, the film looks at depression, trauma and the weight of everyday life with a gentle, slice-of-life approach. It also takes a reflective, almost philosophical angle on what can keep a person going. The film is adapted from a novel and runs just over two hours.
Please note: this film deals with suicidal thoughts and mental health struggles. If you are going through a hard time, please reach out to someone you trust or a local support service.
