Decision to Leave plot: what the story is about (no spoilers)
A climber is found dead at the foot of a mountain near Busan, and the case lands on the desk of Jang Hae-joon (Park Hae-il). He is a meticulous detective who sleeps badly and works long stakeouts. Was it an accident, or something more deliberate? His attention soon settles on the dead man’s widow, Song Seo-rae (Tang Wei). She is a Chinese woman living in South Korea, and her calm reaction to the news sets her apart from a typical grieving spouse.
As Hae-joon questions and watches her, the investigation becomes more personal. Seo-rae’s Korean is limited, so their conversations pass through translation apps, phone messages and audio recordings, and every word can carry a second meaning. The detective finds himself drawn to the very person he is supposed to be scrutinising, and the line between suspicion and attraction begins to blur.
Set between the mountains and the sea, Decision to Leave is part police procedural and part forbidden love story. It asks how well you can really know someone you are trained to doubt.
