The year is the late 1940s, and Japan is only beginning to pick itself up after the war. Then a colossal creature rises from the sea. Linked to atomic testing and radiation, Godzilla threatens to wipe out what little the country has managed to rebuild. A nation already at zero now faces falling into the negative. That is the idea behind the film’s original Japanese tagline, roughly “Postwar Japan. From zero to minus.” Facing this threat forces Koichi and the people around him to confront their past, their fears and what they owe one another. The film blends wartime trauma with naval confrontations on the open water.
