Pasukan 1000 Janda plot: what we know so far
The year is 1599, and Aceh’s coastline is under attack. A Dutch fleet led by Cornelis de Kraker (Ron Smoorenburg) has pushed into the Strait of Malacca. As villages burn, the men who stood guard over the land fall one after another. The women they leave behind face a stark choice: grieve and wait for the worst, or take up arms themselves.
Pasukan 1000 Janda (literally “The Army of 1000 Widows”) follows these women as they turn loss into resolve. At the centre is Malahayati, a noblewoman played by Atiqah Hasiholan. Around her gather fighters such as Maisaroh (Cut Mini), Farida, Dahlia, Salwa and Fatma. Together they form a fighting force the invaders never planned for. Their aim is to shield their homes and children from a colonial power arriving with warships.
The film is described as based on a true story and a real person. It promises sea battles, swordplay and large-scale combat against the backdrop of early Dutch colonial ambitions in Southeast Asia.

What makes Pasukan 1000 Janda notable
- A female-led war epic from Indonesia: Large historical action films centred on women warriors are still rare in the region. This one puts widows at the front line rather than on the sidelines.
- Director and writer Archie Hekagery: Hekagery both wrote and directed the film, which is produced by Manara Films.
- A strong Indonesian cast: Atiqah Hasiholan leads, with Cut Mini, Ully Triani, Tasha Siahaan, Fergie Brittany, Dafina Jamasir, Muzakki Ramdhan and Emil Kusumo. European actors Ron Smoorenburg and Vincent Verhaag play Cornelis de Kraker and Achille Marozzo.
- Genre mix: The film blends action, adventure, drama, history and war, with fantasy and swashbuckler elements in the mix.
- Bilingual setting: Dialogue is in Indonesian and Dutch, reflecting the clash between Acehnese defenders and the Dutch fleet.
