The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): plot without spoilers, voice cast, audience reviews, and where to watch the stop-motion musical in the Philippines.

The Nightmare Before Christmas plot: a spoiler-free synopsis

In Halloween Town, scaring people is a way of life, and nobody does it better than Jack Skellington, the tall, bony skeleton who leads the town’s yearly frights. But after yet another October 31 of screams and applause, Jack feels strangely hollow. The routine that thrills his neighbours no longer excites him, and he begins to wonder whether there is more to life than haunting.

That restlessness changes when the warm, glittering spirit of Christmas captures his imagination. Jack decides that Halloween Town should take over the holiday. He rallies its ghosts, witches and other odd residents to prepare a very different kind of December 25, with eerie gifts and a daring plan involving Santa Claus himself.

Not everyone shares his excitement. Sally, a gentle rag doll, senses that Jack’s eager scheme could go terribly wrong and tries to protect him from his own ambitions. Along the way, the Mayor, the troublemaking trio Lock, Shock and Barrel, and the menacing Oogie Boogie each have a part to play in a holiday mix-up unlike any other.

What makes this stop-motion musical notable

  • Director and writer: The film is directed by Henry Selick, with a screenplay by Caroline Thompson.
  • A distinctive voice cast: Jack has two voices. Chris Sarandon handles his speaking lines, and composer-performer Danny Elfman provides his singing voice. William Hickey plays Dr. Finkelstein, Glenn Shadix plays the Mayor, Paul Reubens plays Lock, and Ken Page plays Oogie Boogie. Edward Ivory voices Santa Claus.
  • Handcrafted animation: The film is made with stop-motion animation, so every character and set was physically built and moved frame by frame. It mixes fantasy, family adventure and musical numbers.
  • Two holidays in one: The story blends Halloween imagery, such as pumpkins, ghosts and skeletons, with Christmas trees and Santa Claus. That mix makes it a popular pick from October through December.
  • Origin: It is an American production from Touchstone Pictures and Skellington Productions, first released on 9 October 1993. It runs a brisk 76 minutes.
