The Raid plot: what the film is about
The Raid (original Indonesian title: Serbuan Maut) is set in Jakarta and centres on a single, dangerous operation. Before sunrise, an elite police SWAT unit moves into a crumbling high-rise tenement controlled by a ruthless crime boss. For years this tower block has served as a hideout for criminals, and the police have kept their distance.
The squad’s objective sounds straightforward: climb through the building, reach the man running it and bring him in. That plan falls apart once the people inside discover that officers have entered. Their exits are sealed and the building is turned against them. The team is trapped far from its target and has to battle its way up, floor by floor, through the gangsters who answer to the crime lord.
Iko Uwais leads the cast as Rama, one of the officers caught up in the mission. Joe Taslim plays Jaka and Donny Alamsyah plays Andi. Almost all of the story takes place inside one building, and the film uses that confined setting for relentless close-quarters fighting. The tagline sums up the premise: “1 Ruthless Crime Lord, 20 Elite Cops, 30 Floors of Hell.”
