Flourished Peony plot: what the story is about
In Tang dynasty China, He Weifang is a merchant’s daughter whose fragile health shapes the course of her life. It leads her family to push her into a marriage with Liu Chang, a husband who struggles to make up his mind. Weifang is the opposite: determined, outspoken and unwilling to bend. The match was arranged for practical reasons, and it soon shows strain as their temperaments collide.
Weifang’s world grows larger when she meets Jiang Changyang. He has a reputation for self-interest so notorious that people in Chang’an treat him as the capital’s most corrupt official. That reputation may not tell the whole story about him. Weifang has a rare talent for growing peonies and a growing wish to shape her own future. Through her, the series explores what it takes for a woman of her era to build something of her own, in business and in life.
Known in Chinese as 国色芳华 and adapted from a novel, Flourished Peony blends historical costume drama with romance, ambition and the tensions of marriage alliances.
