Guardians of the Dafeng plot: what the story is about
Guardians of the Dafeng (original title: 大奉打更人) is a 2025 Chinese costume drama that mixes mystery, action and comedy. Its hero, Xu Qi’an, has only just finished his studies at a police academy when he suddenly opens his eyes in an unfamiliar realm. It is nothing like the modern life he knew. Confucian scholars, Taoists and Buddhists hold real power there, and demons and warlocks are part of everyday reality.
Xu Qi’an soon learns that his situation is dire. He is about to be banished to a distant frontier town. Rather than accept that fate, he spots a way out: a place in a formidable organization of guardians. Joining their ranks could change the course of his life.
The premise brings together swordplay, investigation and a classic hero’s journey. A newcomer with a modern policing background has to find his footing in a world governed by very different rules and forces. Along the way, the story leaves room for romance and lighter comedic moments.
