Originally titled イクサガミ in Japan, Last Samurai Standing is a Japanese period action drama set in the early years of the Meiji era. During this time, the country was moving away from its feudal past and the old warrior class was losing its place in society.

At the centre of the story is Shujiro Saga, a swordsman whose reputation once rested on never having lost a fight. That legend belongs to another time, though, and he now carries a heavy responsibility: the people closest to him, his family and the villagers who depend on him, need saving. Desperate for a way to protect them, Shujiro enters a brutal survival contest in which the participants are fighters and only the strongest can hope to come out alive.

The premise blends classic jidaigeki swordplay with the tension of a battle royale. The series frames a death game against the backdrop of 19th-century Japan, where tradition and modernisation collide. It is a story about what a samurai is willing to risk when the world no longer has room for him.
