Squid Game Plot: What the Series Is About
Squid Game (오징어 게임) begins with Seong Gi-hun, a man badly short on money, receiving a strange invitation to take part in a series of games with a large cash prize. He isn’t the only one. Hundreds of other people, all under heavy financial pressure, accept the same offer and are taken to an isolated location. There, a secret organization runs the competition like a twisted game show.
The games are ones every child knows, simple playground contests that most of us played growing up. The twist is the price of losing, which is far more brutal than anyone expected. Each player, now known only by a number, has to decide how far they will go for the money and whether they can trust the people around them.
The series blends survival thriller, mystery and human drama. It asks hard questions about debt, desperation and cruelty, and about what ordinary people might do when they feel they have nothing left to lose. Its tagline sums up the stakes: “Only one can win.”
