3 Idiots plot summary (no spoilers)

At one of India’s top engineering universities, success is measured in marks, rankings and job offers. Most students learn to memorise and keep their heads down. Ranchoddas Chanchad, known to everyone as Rancho, does neither. He questions lectures, mocks rote learning and treats every rule as a puzzle to solve.

His roommates, Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi, arrive carrying heavy expectations from their families. They are soon swept up in Rancho’s pranks and his stubborn belief that you should study what you love, not what pays. Their main opponent is the director of the institute, Viru Sahastrabudhhe, nicknamed Virus. He runs the campus on pressure and competition and has little patience for students who think differently. Tension rises further when Rancho grows close to Pia, the dean’s daughter, and Virus becomes determined to see the trio fail.

Told partly through flashbacks, the story moves between slapstick comedy, friendship and the strain of growing up under constant academic pressure. Its tagline sums up its spirit: Aal Izz Well!
