Ghost in the Shell (1995): Mamoru Oshii's cyberpunk anime film. Plot summary, voice cast, US release dates and where to stream it free or rent.

Ghost in the Shell plot summary (no spoilers)

The year is 2029. Computer networks and cybernetic bodies now reach into almost every part of daily life, and that progress has opened a new kind of danger: a person’s mind can be hacked. Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg officer with Section 9, a special unit made up of cybernetically enhanced police, is drawn into the hunt for a notorious and elusive hacker known only as the Puppetmaster.

This criminal is far more than a nuisance. The Puppetmaster slips into other people’s minds and steers them, and the case soon spills into political territory. Alongside Section 9 colleagues such as Batou and Togusa, Kusanagi follows a trail that turns into a manhunt through a dense, rain-soaked futuristic city.

The chase is only part of the story. The film’s tagline, “It found a voice… now it needs a body,” points to its deeper questions. In a world where bodies can be replaced and memories rewritten, what makes someone human? And where does the self begin and end? The result is a cyberpunk thriller that balances tense action with a reflective, philosophical tone.
