Godzilla Minus One: Plot Summary (No Spoilers)
Japan in the late 1940s is a country already in ruins. Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) returns from the war carrying a heavy secret: he was meant to fly as a kamikaze pilot, and he survived when others did not. Haunted by guilt and a sense of unfinished duty, he struggles to rebuild a life among the wreckage.
Along the way he crosses paths with Noriko Oishi (Minami Hamabe) and a young war orphan, Akiko. Together they form a fragile, unlikely household in a city still counting its losses. Then a colossal creature, linked to the radioactive legacy of atomic testing, rises from the sea and threatens to strip away what little the country has left.
With a nation that has gone, in the words of the original Japanese tagline, from zero to minus, Shikishima and a group of fellow survivors must decide whether they can face this new horror and confront the past that still holds them. The story builds toward tense naval confrontations, but its core is personal: guilt, responsibility and the families people choose.

What Makes Godzilla Minus One Notable
- A Toho production: The film comes from TOHO, the studio behind the original Godzilla, with TOHO Studios and Robot Communications. It is a Japanese-language film (ゴジラ-1.0) that reboots the franchise in a new period setting.
- Writer-director Takashi Yamazaki: Yamazaki wrote and directed the film, setting the giant-monster story firmly in postwar Japan instead of a modern city.
- Cast: Ryunosuke Kamiki leads as Koichi Shikishima, alongside Minami Hamabe (Noriko Oishi), Yuki Yamada (Shiro Mizushima), Munetaka Aoki (Sosaku Tachibana), Hidetaka Yoshioka (Kenji Noda), Sakura Ando (Sumiko Ota), Kuranosuke Sasaki (Yoji Akitsu), Sae Nagatani (Akiko), Miou Tanaka (Captain Tatsuo Hotta) and Yuya Endo (Tadayuki Saito).
- Genre blend: It mixes science fiction, horror and action with the tokusatsu tradition of Japanese special-effects cinema, plus a grounded human drama about survivor’s guilt and found family.
- Two versions: Besides the original release, a black-and-white version was released in cinemas and later on streaming.
