Plot Summary: What Is Howl’s Moving Castle About?
Sophie is a quiet young hat-maker who leads an unremarkable life, until a visit from the formidable Witch of the Waste changes everything. A curse leaves her trapped in the body of an elderly woman, unable to explain her situation to anyone she knows. With nothing left to lose, Sophie sets out on her own and finds her way to an extraordinary place: the walking, wheezing castle of Howl, a gifted and unpredictable wizard.
Inside this strange, ramshackle home Sophie meets an unusual household, including the fiery Calcifer and Howl’s young apprentice Markl. As she settles in, she discovers that Howl is hiding from more than just witches. The kingdom is heading towards war, and Howl wants no part in fighting for the king. Sophie soon finds herself pulled into his quiet rebellion.
Set in a richly imagined world of magic, flying machines and steampunk detail, the film follows Sophie’s search for a way to break the curse. Along the way she gains a new understanding of courage, loyalty and the people around her.
