Memories of Murder (2003) guide: Bong Joon Ho's Korean crime thriller with Song Kang-ho. Plot summary, cast, US release date and where to rent or buy it.

Memories of Murder: Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

It is the 1980s, and a quiet farming province in South Korea is shaken by a string of brutal killings. Young women are being attacked and murdered, and the local police have neither the experience nor the tools to handle a case like this. Detective Park Doo-man (Song Kang-ho) leads the investigation with Detective Cho Yong-koo (Kim Roi-ha), relying on instinct, intimidation and confessions forced out of suspects in the interrogation room.

Detective Seo Tae-yoon (Kim Sang-kyung) joins the investigation and brings a very different, more methodical approach. The clash between these styles creates friction inside the team just as the pressure from above and the fear in the community keep rising. Each new lead seems promising at first, but the evidence is thin and the procedures are crude. As the killer continues to strike, the detectives become more frustrated and desperate.

The film is inspired by real events, and it follows the investigation as much as the hunt itself. It shows how a society under strain, an overworked police force and the limits of the era shape the search for the truth.
