Satan's Slaves (2017): Joko Anwar's Indonesian horror about a family haunted after a mother's death. Plot summary, cast, release dates and where to watch.

Satan’s Slaves (Pengabdi Setan): Plot Summary Without Spoilers

The Suwono family is struggling long before anything supernatural happens. Mawarni (Ayu Laksmi), the mother, has been ill for three years with a condition no one can explain. The cost of that long illness has left the household in serious financial trouble. Rini (Tara Basro), the eldest child, carries much of the load at home. She shares the house with her father Bahri (Bront Palarae), her younger brothers Toni, Bondi and little Ian, and their grandmother Rahma.

After Mawarni’s funeral, the family expects a period of mourning. Instead, the house starts to feel occupied. Ordinary things such as a radio or an old vinyl record begin to carry an unsettling weight. The children slowly come to suspect that what has returned is more than a painful memory. As the disturbances grow harder to ignore, Rini and her siblings must work out what is happening and why it seems centred on them.

The film’s tagline captures the dread at its core: “She comes back for the last child.”
