Sense and Sensibility (2026): Plot Summary Without Spoilers
Two sisters with opposite temperaments sit at the centre of this new screen version of Jane Austen’s classic novel. Elinor Dashwood (Daisy Edgar-Jones) is measured and guarded and keeps her feelings to herself. Her younger sister Marianne (Esmé Creed-Miles) feels everything openly and intensely. Together with their mother (Caitríona Balfe) and youngest sister Margaret (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), they face a sudden change in circumstances that leaves them dependent on a rigid, class-conscious society.
That shift brings them into the orbit of several figures. Their half-brother John (Tom Brooke) and his wife Fanny (Stacy Martin) look after their own interests. The talkative Mrs. Jennings (Fiona Shaw) takes an interest in the girls. Three very different men complicate matters: the reserved Edward Ferrars (George MacKay), the steady Colonel Brandon (Herbert Nordrum) and the charismatic John Willoughby (Frank Dillane).
The film is set in 18th-century England. It follows courtship, social expectation and the limited options open to women of the era. Through all of it, the bond between the sisters is tested and strengthened. As the tagline puts it: “No one knows your heart like a sister.”
