Snowpiercer (2013) guide: Bong Joon Ho's dystopian sci-fi thriller with Chris Evans and Song Kang-ho. Plot summary, cast, US release and where to watch.

Snowpiercer Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The world has frozen over. In the 2030s, after a climate-control experiment goes disastrously wrong, Earth is locked in a perpetual winter that few living things survive. Humanity’s last refuge is a single train, the Snowpiercer, kept running on an endless loop around the globe by an engine that never stops.

On board, survival comes with a strict hierarchy. Where you ride depends on your class. Those crammed into the rear carriages live in cold, hunger and squalor, while the front of the train is reserved for comfort and privilege. Resentment has been building for years, and the people at the back are ready to push forward, carriage by carriage, towards the engine and the man said to control it.

Chris Evans plays Curtis, who stands at the centre of this revolt. Along the way, the rebels must rely on allies like Namgoong Minsu (Song Kang-ho), a security specialist, and his daughter Yona (Ko Asung). Each new carriage reveals more about how the train really works. The film’s tagline sums up the mission: Fight your way to the front.

What Makes Snowpiercer Notable

  • Director: Snowpiercer is a film by Bong Joon Ho, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kelly Masterson. It is based on a graphic novel.
  • An international production: The film is a South Korean production from Opus Pictures, Moho Film, CJ Entertainment and Union Investment Partners. Its original title is 설국열차. The dialogue moves between English, Korean, French and Japanese, which suits a story about the last survivors of a whole planet.
  • The cast: The ensemble mixes Korean and Western talent:
    • Chris Evans as Curtis
    • Song Kang-ho as Namgoong Minsu
    • Ko Asung as Yona
    • Tilda Swinton as Mason
    • Ed Harris as Wilford
    • John Hurt as Gilliam
    • Jamie Bell as Edgar
    • Octavia Spencer as Tanya
    • Ewen Bremner as Andrew
    • Alison Pill as the Teacher
  • Genre and themes: It blends action, science fiction and drama. The train works as an allegory for social class, so the story is about inequality and survival as much as spectacle. Revolt, guilt, duplicity and population control all shape its post-apocalyptic world.
  • Runtime: 127 minutes.
