The year is 1973, and Chile is on the verge of a coup. In Santiago, CIA bureau chief MJ (Steve Buscemi) sends two of his agents on an assignment far from the capital: Easter Island, the isolated Pacific outpost known for its giant stone statues.

The agents are Chris (John Malkovich) and Lee (Sam Rockwell), partners who have worked together for many years. They carry heavy baggage to the island, including troubling histories and the scheming that comes with their line of work. The remote setting offers no escape from either.

Things get more complicated when Chris strikes up an unexpected friendship with two rebellious students. That connection could push the whole mission off course. Writer-director Martin McDonagh sets this Cold War story against the island’s dramatic landscape and blends comedy, crime and thriller.

The film’s tagline sets the moral tone: “Sometimes you’ve got to do a terrible thing for the greater good.”
