Flourished Peony plot summary
Set in Tang dynasty China, Flourished Peony (国色芳华) follows He Weifang, a merchant’s daughter played by Yang Zi. Because of her fragile health, Weifang is pushed into a marriage with Liu Chang (Miles Wei). It is a match arranged for practical reasons rather than affection. The two are badly suited. He tends to waver while she refuses to bend, and the union soon becomes a source of strain rather than security.
Weifang’s path then crosses with Jiang Changyang (Li Xian), an official whose reputation in Chang’an is far from flattering. People see him as self-serving, but there may be more to him than the gossip suggests. Weifang also has a gift for growing peonies, which hints at a life she might build on her own terms.
The story blends historical fiction, costume drama and romance. It weighs a woman’s ambitions against the expectations of family, marriage and society. The tone moves between tense and witty, with plenty of complicated relationships along the way.
