Tulsa King plot summary: a mob veteran far from home
After a quarter of a century behind bars, Dwight “The General” Manfredi walks out of prison expecting some reward for his loyalty to the New York mafia. Instead, the family he served sends him away, assigning him to Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city with no established mob presence and nothing in common with the streets he once ran.
The move doesn’t feel like a promotion. It feels like exile. Dwight begins to suspect that the people he protected for decades are no longer watching out for him. Rather than fade away, he decides to put down roots and start a criminal operation of his own in the American Midwest. He recruits locals into an unlikely team as he goes.
The set-up is a classic fish-out-of-water story. An ageing gangster with old-school instincts has to adapt to a place that doesn’t play by East Coast rules. Alongside the racketeering and the power plays, the series explores loyalty, betrayal and Dwight’s attempts to reconnect with the family ties he left behind. It all comes with a dry, often comic edge that blends crime drama with dramedy.
